“Instead of waiting for all the bureaucracy and paperwork, I decided just to go there, figure out what I need to do, and then figure out where I could be helpful, whether it’s medical or non-medical. I really didn’t care. I felt that I just needed to do something,” says Laura Bukavina, MD, MPH.
In this episode, Urology Times® Assistant Editor Janelle Hart spoke with Laura Bukavina, MD, MPH, and Alberto A. Castro Bigalli, MD, about their recent mission to the Polish-Ukrainian border, where they aided thousands of refugees who were fleeing war in Ukraine. Bukavina, who has family and friends in Ukraine, has worked to raise money and awareness on social media and collect donations to send to the border. Castro Bigalli, who has experience helping civilians in times of crisis, immediately joined Bukavina in this effort. The 2 helped many Ukrainian refugees and garnered much support from fellow urologists. Bukavina is a urologic oncology fellow at Fox Chase Cancer Center and Castro Bigalli is an incoming resident at Temple Urology in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
