Surgical instruments combine bipolar, ultrasonic energies

Center Valley, PA-The FDA recently granted clearance for the Thunderbeat hand instrument and universal surgical platform. Thunderbeat combines advanced bipolar and ultrasonic energies into a single multi-functional hand instrument, allowing surgeons to simultaneously seal and cut vessels up to and including 7 mm in size with minimal thermal spread, according to Olympus, the instrument's manufacturer.

System maintains patient core body temperature during surgery

Mundelein, IL-Medline Industries, Inc.'s PerfecTemp is a patient warming system that maintains core body temperature during surgery. The system features technologically advanced conductive heating delivered through a high-tech synthetic OR table pad that effectively maintains normal body temperature in anesthetized patients. It also helps hospitals comply with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Surgical Care Improvement Project measure Inf-10 that states, "Surgical patients should be actively warmed during surgery," according to Medline.

Smartphone application helps CKD patients monitor diet

Boulder, CO-A new smartphone application called KidneyDiet helps chronic kidney disease patients track their intake of potassium, phosphorus, and protein. After meeting with a dietitian, the patient enters their recommended guidelines for the "3 Ps" into the app. When the patient tracks their food intake through the app, it will alert them if they go above their guidelines.
