Dr. SchaefferIn discussing research at the 2014 AUA annual meeting, Anthony J. Schaeffer, MD, called attention to an important paper concerning urinary tract infection in children, this one in the realm of diagnosis.
“At this meeting, attendees will learn about a new marker for susceptibility to urinary tract infection in children,” said Dr. Schaeffer, professor and chair of urology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago. “Children more susceptible to infection had a relatively lower level of a urothelial bacteriostatic effect than did healthy controls.”
Another study will show that antimicrobial prophylaxis after surgery is subject to considerable variation. “The assumption that improved compliance would lead to reduced infectious complications needs to be tested,” he said.
Researchers from various institutions continue to address the challenging problem of infection following prostate biopsy.
“A number of abstracts confirm that post-prostate biopsy infection rates are related to inappropriate antimicrobial prophylaxis,” Dr. Schaeffer said, “and that targeted prophylaxis based on pre-biopsy cultures can lead to a significant reduction in infectious complications.”
Here are Dr. Schaeffer's abstract picks for the 2014 AUA annual meeting:
