Justin Dubin, MD, on the use of AI in the male infertility space

Justin M. Dubin, MD, outlines the current ways that artificial intelligence is being used in the male infertility space.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the way that health care professionals deliver care.

In a recent interview with Urology Times®, Justin M. Dubin, MD, a men’s health expert at Memorial Healthcare System in Florida, explained how AI is currently being used in the male infertility space. The first way that he touched on was the use of AI to perform semen analysis. According to Dubin, AI offers the ability to provide more consistent, less subjective analyses of semen quality.

“What artificial intelligence has been doing has been stepping in and [providing a] faster, seemingly as accurate way [for] semen analysis, really alleviating a time issue that had been there before, and removing subjectivity and creating more objectivity within these markers,” he explained.

Dubin also touched on the use of AI to predict outcomes with microsurgical testicular sperm extraction (microTESE) in patients with azoospermia. This is especially relevant when considering the financial burden of the procedure, which can be particularly devastating when nothing is found. With AI, health care professionals could better predict the likelihood of success in each patient, enabling more informed patient selection.

“There is a lot of promise in the AI space when it comes to infertility, because these are things that are emotionally, physically, and financially draining to a couple,” Dubin concluded. “If we can help guide them and give them a little bit better parameters or ways to predict the outcomes, or help us modify the outcomes by using AI, I think that would be really wonderful.”
