Kristen Scarpato, MD, on recognizing and managing imposter syndrome
Kristen R. Scarpato, MD, MPH, recaps a panel discussion at SWIU 2026 focused on imposter syndrome.
In this interview, Kristen R. Scarpato, MD, MPH, reflects on a candid panel discussion at the Society of Women in Urology (SWIU) 15th Annual Clinical Mentoring Conference focused on imposter syndrome. Scarpato is an associate professor of urology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
According to Scarpato, the session began by defining imposter syndrome as a disconnect between one’s achievements and one’s sense of self. The conversation also explored who may be most affected, with a particular focus on women and individuals earlier in their careers.
The panelists also discussed common triggers for imposter syndrome, including professional transitions such as moving from medical school to residency or from training into practice, as well as complications and the stress of comparison. Scarpato noted that physicians often compare themselves to colleagues, sometimes based on perception rather than reality, leading to unrealistic narratives about others being “perfect” surgeons, parents, or researchers, while overlooking their own accomplishments.
Importantly, the session emphasized strategies to combat these feelings, including openly acknowledging them and discussing them within trusted communities like SWIU. Panelists encouraged attendees to focus on activities aligned with their personal values and to use energy intentionally, helping to maintain perspective amid professional pressures. A key takeaway, Scarpato underscored, is that experiencing imposter feelings is not inherently negative. When recognized and managed constructively, these emotions can foster resilience, motivation, and growth, serving as a source of strength rather than a barrier to thriving in one’s career.
