Margaret Knoedler, MD, on the Reverse Deflection CVAC System

Margaret A. Knoedler, MD, discusses her experience using the Reverse Deflection CVAC System.

The second-generation CVAC system launched in 2024, initially featuring standard deflection. Just recently, Calyxo announced the launch of their Reverse Deflection CVAC System, allowing endourologists the option to use their preferred deflection mode during kidney stone procedures.1

In a recent interview with Urology Times®, Margaret A. Knoedler, MD, discussed her experience using the reverse deflection system and highlighted the benefits of the different modes for both surgeons and trainees. Knoedler is an endourologist as well as the head of the section of endourology and the fellowship director at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

“I'm used to reverse deflection,” she explained. “I think actually, looking at the numbers, over 90% of people in Wisconsin use reverse deflection. [There]'s always [been] a little bit of a learning curve going from standard to reverse.”

Knoedler also emphasized the importance of reverse deflection for residents and fellows.

“Not only are they trying to learn the procedure, but then they're also trying to remember whether they're using reverse deflection or standard deflection,” Knoedler said. “Reducing that cognitive load [by] having it the same way every single time really allows for a smoother transition from a standard ureteroscope to the CVAC system.”
