The center will offer a comprehensive range of treatments, including prostate artery embolization for men suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia with very large prostates.

Michigan Institute of Urology (MIU) is excited to announce its partnership with Prostate Centers USA and the opening of IR Centers at MIU, a dedicated outpatient medical center for Interventional Radiology procedures, on December 27. This new center will provide patients with the option of minimally invasive treatments, which many individuals prefer due to their less invasive nature.

Leading IR Centers at MIU will be Dr. Scott Schwartz, a highly respected vascular interventional radiologist who previously served as the Division Chief of Interventional Radiology at Henry Ford Hospital. Dr. Schwartz is renowned for his expertise in interventional and embolization technique.

"We are thrilled to have Dr. Schwartz leading our efforts to provide more minimally invasive therapies to our patients," said MIU CEO Dr. Mitchell Hollander. "His extensive experience and pioneering work in the field make him an exceptional addition to our team."

The center will offer a comprehensive range of treatments, including prostate artery embolization (PAE) for men suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) with very large prostates. BPH, also known as an enlarged prostate, can cause symptoms such as increased urinary frequency, weak urine stream, and difficulty urinating.

In collaboration with urologists, Dr. Schwartz was the first physician in Michigan to offer PAE and has built one of the state's largest and most experienced practices for this procedure. Notably, the American Urological Guidelines for BPH management have been updated to endorse PAE as a recommended treatment for men suffering from an enlarged prostate.

"This initiative validates our teams’ dedication to bring the highest quality outcomes, data, and innovation to patients in the region. Through our combined efforts, we are able to offer patients a minimally invasive solution that can significantly improve their quality of life," said Dr. Sandeep Bagla, President, Prostate Centers USA.

During a PAE procedure, the interventional radiologist guides a microcatheter into the blood vessels supplying the prostate. Microscopic beads are then injected into these blood vessels, temporarily blocking the blood flow to the prostate gland. This causes the prostate to shrink, soften, and eventually be absorbed over time, providing relief and improvement of symptoms within two to three weeks. Importantly, this procedure does not require surgical incision or the insertion of a device into the urethra.

"Traditional surgical options for treating BPH are often not suitable for patients with large prostates," explained MIU's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Jason Hafron. "With Dr. Schwartz's expertise and the new IR center, we can offer our patients a non-surgical treatment option that allows them to return home the same day and experience quicker recovery times with lower complication risks."

In addition to PAE, IR Centers at MIU will expand their services to include other minimally invasive procedures targeting conditions such as varicoceles for male infertility, uterine fibroids, pelvic congestion syndrome, and hemorrhoids.

IR Centers at MIU is conveniently located on the second floor of 130 Town Center Dr. in Troy.
