Results of the AUA residents and fellows committee essay contest
This August 2022 issue of the Journal of Urology contains an exciting publication on how urology trainees see their future and the future of the specialty.
Dr. Daniel Igel, chief urology resident in the Department of Urology at the Kansas University School of Medicine, also serves as the current South-Central Representative for the AUA Residents and Fellows Committee. This year, the committee launched an essay contest in which urology residents and fellows were requested to predict the future of the specialty from their point of view. As the contest chair, Dr. Igel and his team received several essays containing different versions of the future, ranging from hopeful to unenthusiastic, including some thrilling and distinctive applications of bioengineered organs, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence in urology.
Although several essays stood out, a contest must have a winner. The winner was Dr. Avi Baskin, currently a PGY-5 at The University of California, San Francisco, who wrote a critical but also humorous article about his vision for the future of urology. In his text, he thoughtfully highlighted that the unquestionable need for technological advances cannot be achieved at the expense of the humanistic component of urology and medicine.
