Same-day discharge after robotic prostatectomy shows low uptake in Michigan

Please describe the background for this study.

The Michigan Urological Surgery Improvement Collaborative or MUSIC, as many of us in the field know, keeps track of men with prostate cancer from diagnosis for all the practices across the state, and so we have access to a lot of information, and we're able to look at practice variation and practice patterns across the state. And our goal ultimately is to improve the quality of care that patients receive for their prostate cancer.

What were some of the notable findings? Were any of them surprising to you and your coauthors?

We have been investigating prostatectomy outcomes for years, probably over a decade in MUSIC, and we had started hearing from some vanguard centers about same-day discharge, and it seemed like in the literature, the centers that had been doing it were getting great results. We even had 1 of the pioneers come out to the collaborative and talk with us and share with us what were some of the tips and tricks to have a successful launch of same-day discharge. We did this as a group, and I felt that in response, we would see a lot of uptake across the state, especially through the COVID era, where there was a lot of pressure for keeping patients out of the hospital. And so we looked back from 2012 to the present, and looked at how much same-day discharge after prostatectomy was being performed across the state of Michigan. And we were pretty surprised that it was very low. In no year did it exceed 5% of the prostatectomies across the state. We did see a rise in 2020, and that's been kind of maintained in 2021 and 2022, but overall, it looked like a pretty low rate. So that was pretty surprising, I thought.
