Advancing Multidisciplinary Training and Team-Based Care in NMIBC

The expert faculty emphasize the growing importance of multidisciplinary collaboration and workforce development as NMIBC management evolves to include systemic immunotherapies.

The expert faculty emphasize the growing importance of multidisciplinary collaboration and workforce development as NMIBC management evolves to include systemic immunotherapies. They discuss how academic centers must adapt training programs for urology and medical oncology fellows to promote cross-specialty learning, ensuring future clinicians are equipped to manage patients collaboratively. This includes shared clinics where urologic oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists review cases together, offering fellows and advanced practice providers (APPs) real-world exposure to coordinated care. The panel highlights that APPs—such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants—play a pivotal role in patient education, monitoring for immune-related adverse events, managing logistics, and maintaining communication across the care continuum. Faculty agree that as patient volumes increase and therapies become more complex, optimizing APP integration will be critical for efficiency and patient satisfaction. They conclude that fostering multidisciplinary teamwork is essential for sustaining high-quality NMIBC care.
