Angela Smith, MD, reflects on key themes from SWIU 2026
Angela B. Smith, MD, MS, discusses the guiding priorities behind shaping this year’s Society of Women in Urology annual meeting.
In this interview, Angela B. Smith, MD, MS, discusses the guiding priorities behind shaping this year’s Society of Women in Urology (SWIU) annual meeting. Smith is the vice chair of academic affairs and a professor of urology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, as well as the president-elect for SWIU.
This year’s conference, Smith noted, centered on acknowledging the widespread change and uncertainty facing the medical community. Recognizing that attendees span private practice, academic medicine, and all career stages, the planning committee intentionally reframed this period of flux as an opportunity for growth. Rather than viewing change solely as a challenge, the meeting was designed to help attendees see it as a catalyst for reflection, reinvention, and forward momentum.
Smith highlights that the program’s themes were structured to resonate with women in urology at different points in their careers—from students and trainees to those in early, mid, or late practice. Core thematic pillars include “changing from within,” which addresses personal development and challenges such as imposter syndrome; “changing our trajectory,” emphasizing that careers are dynamic and can be reimagined over time; and “changing the future,” with a focus on advocacy and collective impact. The meeting also places emphasis on “changing how we sustain ourselves,” dedicating time to discussions on longevity, balance, and well-being in the profession.
Ultimately, Smith hopes attendees leave the meeting continuing meaningful conversations about their careers and personal growth. She emphasizes the value of small, intentional changes, whether through reflection, mentorship, or new professional connections, all of which can lead to lasting impact. Describing SWIU as an experiential and uplifting conference, Smith notes that many attendees find it arrives at exactly the right moment each year, offering renewed energy, perspective, and a sense of community to start the year.
