Dornier single-use ureteroscope and ureteral access sheath launch on US market
Key Takeaways
- Dornier MedTech America launched the Hoover FANS and Axis II Slim ureteroscope for kidney stone treatment in the US, both FDA-cleared.
- The devices are designed to integrate with Dornier’s Thulio laser, providing a comprehensive solution for stone procedures.
Both the Dornier Hoover Flexible and Navigable Suction Ureteral Access Sheath and the Dornier Axis II Slim single-use ureteroscope are FDA-cleared.
The Dornier Hoover Flexible and Navigable Suction Ureteral Access Sheath (FANS) and Dornier Axis II Slim single-use ureteroscope with a 5.6Fr. distal tip are now commercially available in the US for use in kidney stone treatment, Dornier MedTech America announced in a news release.1
Both the single-use ureteroscope and the FANS are FDA-cleared and have previously been available via a limited release in the US.
The devices are intended to be paired with Dornier’s Thulio pulsed Thulium: YAG laser with RealPulse technology. Together, these 3 tools over a fully integrated set-up for dusting, fragment retrieval, irrigation, and suction control during flexible ureteroscopy.
“Dornier MedTech America has a deep understanding of urological workflows and urologists’ needs. The Dornier Hoover delivers best-in-class suction performance and Dornier Axis II Slim offers best-in-class deflection—giving urologists a proven competitive edge in the operating theater,” said Brock Faulkner, CEO of Dornier MedTech America, in the news release from the company.1 “With the 5.6 Fr. tip, the Dornier Axis II Slim sets a new benchmark for ureteroscope access, and together with Dornier Thulio, these devices form the ultimate 3-in-1 integrated urology solution for advanced stone procedures.”
Data from 2 in-vitro studies of the Dornier Hoover FANS were recently published in the World Journal of Urology, showing that the device outperformed other devices of the same size in both suction performance2 and deflection ability.3
The first study compared the efficiency of stone suction across 3 different FANS of 2 sizes each (10/12Fr and 11/13Fr) using a 7.5Fr single-use flexible ureteroscope. To measure stone suction, the authors reported that “1000 mm3 of 1 to 2 mm stones were distributed equally between the upper and lower poles of a kidney model.”
Overall, the Dornier FANS (formerly Innovex FANS) demonstrated the fastest time in suctioning upper pole calculi at both the 10/12Fr and 11/13Fr sizes. Specifically, in the 10/12Fr size, the Dornier FANS demonstrated an average suction time of 198 seconds (SD, 11.3), compared with 237 seconds (SD, 5.7) with the Clearpetra FANS and 537 seconds (SD, 9.9) with the Reborn FANS (P < .001). At the 11/13Fr size, the Dornier FANS continued to demonstrate the fastest suction time with an average of 158 seconds (SD, 2.8) vs 174 seconds (SD, 7.1) with the Clearpetra FANS and 332 seconds (SD, 4.2) with the Reborn FANS (P < .001).
The Reborn FANS device was not able to reach the lower pole calculi. There was no significant difference in the time taken to suction lower pole calculi between the Dornier and Clearpetra devices.
The second study similarly compared the deflection ability of all 3 FANS at 2 sizes each using a 7.5Fr single-use flexible ureteroscope.
According to the authors, the Dornier FANS showed the greatest deflection ability at both the 10/12Fr and 11/13Fr sizes, followed by the ClearPetra FANS and then the Reborn FANS. The authors also noted that 7.5Fr flexible ureteroscopes deflected FANS better when paired with a 10/12Fr FANS vs an 11/13Fr FANS.
