Dr. Finkelstein on virtual supervision of telemedicine visits

“Remote supervision is something that we are utilizing now and look forward to even growing further,” says Lisa J. Finkelstein, DO, FACOS.

At the 2023 American Urological Association Summit, Lisa J. Finkelstein, DO, FACOS, and Kara L. Watts, MD, presented 5 key points for urologists to discuss with legislators regarding telemedicine. The fourth point was the role of virtual supervision, which Finkelstein discusses in this video. Finkelstein is medical director of telehealth at St. John’s Health, Jackson, Wyoming.

The next one is the role of virtual supervision, and this one might not be as clear, but urologists train residents, and we work with nurses and nurse practitioners and physician assistants. From where I live in Wyoming, it's very difficult for patients sometimes to access specialists, and there are very few specialists and so another concept is payment for supervising other types of providers or residents in training to do telehealth visits or even procedures from a distance. This is a concept that we're talking about also teaching medical students with telemedicine carts where we have peripherals hanging off of them, whether it's a tele-otoscope, a tele-stethoscope, or a high-def camera, or even a cystoscope. So remote supervision is something that we are utilizing now and look forward to even growing further.
